How to Wear a Cycling Cap: Raul Alcala

I don't know if being able to keep one perched on your head during a crash is a talent, or just plain good luck.

At the old Claremont Cyclist blog, I managed a few posts about Raul Alcala and, notably [?], snapped a shot of him at the 2011 Redlands Classic during the first stage time trial.

Twenty-two years before that 2011 race, Alcala raced in the 1989 Tour de France, his second go at le Grande boucle. On stage three of that years' Tour, Alcala became the first rider from Mexico to win a stage of the race. A few stages later Alcala, and teammate Sean Kelly, both crashed into a ditch beside the road (that is Alcala in the photo above). Though clearly in great pain, Alcala recovered and would go on to finish in 8th place, fourteen minutes, twenty-one seconds behind winner Greg Lemond.
