Seen While Riding: Composting Tumblers of Pomona College
I can't determine how long these compost tumblers have been in place but yesterday, riding through the Colleges, was the first that I had notice them. According to a map on the Pomona College website I see that tumblers are located in five places around campus; there are another five outdoor buckets, and seven kitchen buckets. Waste from the tumblers (and dining hall buckets) is picked up by the City of Claremont and taken to a facility in Fontana, while the outdoor buckets are taken by students to the campus organic farm.
Last September Sustainable Claremont's monthly Green Drinks was about composting, and ever since then the mrs. has had that on her mind. Collecting table scraps - anything but meat products - winds up in bags in the freezer until I complain "I can't find anything in here" and she hauls it all off, by bike of course, to the composting area behind the Quakers' meeting house on Harrison. For a little while I can reach the ice cream again.
I don't know that these campus tumblers are, technically, for community use, but now that she knows they are there, and only half as far away as the Quakers...
Tumbler Rules: Any food waste can be put into the tumblers, including meat, dairy, vegetables, fruits, coffee grounds. NO paper waste or napkins, NO industrially-compostable items, such as utensils, plates, cups.
Bucket Rules: Vegetables, fruits, coffee grounds, egg shells are okay; NO meat or dairy; NO paper waste; NO industrially-compostable items.
if you look for them keep in mind, the two that I have so far seen were not where shown on the map
