Green Drinks and Random Palaver

Oh, these guys again. They seem show up every third Thursday for Green Drinks, but then leave before things really get going. To top it off, they return just as the drinks have been quaffed, the conversations have taken all the turns they are going to, and the final lap bell has been rung calling an end to the meeting. Ah well, sometimes the timing is just off.

It is a funny thing, showing up at a place from which you know a ride will be leaving, with the knowledge that you will not be on that ride. You sit inside attempting to follow a conversation while periodically looking over your shoulder to where that other gathering is taking place. Your undivided attention has been compromised. I brought my camera. I should get up and take a shot, or two, before they leave. "Hmm, oh yeah, I met you at the last Green Drinks, right? Your name is..."  Quickly flick the eyes over to the door, everything still looks in order out there, and... back. "A quick trip to Mammoth for the weekend, nice. Going to be beautiful up there." Here comes the distraction, errr, make that the mrs., perfect. "Excuse me" just for a minute as I pick up the camera and walk to the door.

I found out, last night, that the Sustainable Claremont-hosted Green Drinks does not necessarily come with a pre-arranged course layout, not always a pre-determined topic for the conversation to follow. Sometimes there is just an informal free-for-all which... works out just fine. There tend to be many twists and turns, and the surprise is you might not know where the next one will take you. Sort of like the first lap on the morning of the seasons' opening cyclocross race - which, by the way, and though arriving later than normal (calendericly speaking) this year, is in Redlands tomorrow. The talk last night, for instance, went from the usual opening greetings, passed through the Claremont Hills Wilderness Park, invasive plants, bikes (it is good to be tagged as a "bike guy" - sooner or later the topic WILL make its way into the palaver), Marshall Canyon, landscape architecture, landscape construction, parents and their kids, compost (continuing the theme from last month), Maine, hiking, the eastern Sierra, and... you get the idea. Where things might have gone after a second green drink is anyone's guess.

Green Drinks, the third Thursday of each month, at Claremont Craft Ales. Like Sustainable Claremont to get all the latest news to your feed.
