Upcoming: Ride in Search of Autumn...

It seems like ages since I have awoken to a morning with air cool enough to describe as brisk and fresh. But that is just what happened each of the past two mornings. This is the signal I have been awaiting through the long hot days of late summer. If you have lived in Southern California for any length of time you know that Autumn can be long in coming. Summer does not fade easily in these parts, its passing typically drawn out well into October. The one place that seems to keep to schedule is the high country. With that in mind it is time for the M-S-M Ride in Search of Autumn. This has been a regular solo event of mine for the past few years. The ride starts at Manker Flat below Mt. Baldy, climbs to Baldy Notch, descends the north slope to Stockton Flat, and retraces the route back to the start (hence the M-S-M part). The ride is not overly long from a distance standpoint (under 16 miles if I remember correctly), but does climb and descend considerably. If there is any flatness to the ride it is about 20 feet worth at Desert View (top of the Notch). You can read last years recap here.

This is a strictly informal ride. Though no one will be left behind, you will be responsible for your own self. What this means is that you need to bring everything you might reasonably need to get by on - fuel, water, mechanical stuff. This is just a show up and ride type of ride. If a group shows, then call it a group ride, but there will be no grand organization to it. A few non-stress hours riding in the high mountains, then maybe burgers and drinks at Baldy Lodge in Baldy Village afterwards.

In order to avoid the sometimes large numbers of hikers and trail runners, this ride will take place on Friday, October 26. Meet at Manker Flat where the road to Baldy Notch takes off. Park in the median or alongside the road like everyone else. Be there by 9:00am and be ready to ride by 9:15 sharp. Don't forget your Adventure Pass (I think they are still required there). Shoot me a word or two if interested so I know to look for you.
