My Eyes Widened

I was reading through a recent edition of the liberal rag I subscribe to (well, actually I don't consider it a liberal rag, but I'm sure there are folks who do). I have read the High Country News for, well for decades now, not really expecting to find the word "bicycle" on any of the pages of any given issue when, in the second paragraph of the final essay: "The splatters on my windshield were electric yellow... I now understood why writer Sara Dykman followed the monarch butterfly migration over 10,000 miles by bicycle..."

All of a sudden my eyes widened, and what I was reading took on extra meaning.

I finished the essay, then opened the computer to discover what I could about this Sara Dykman. You may already know where this is going, and I may be a little late to this party - Ms Dykman didn't just follow the migration by bicycle, she also turned the experience into a book. The images that showed on my computer screen reminded me that I had seen that book - whether at the local Barnes & Noble, or on the B&N website, I don't recall - but had passed on at the time in favor of something else.

I'm wading my way through the pages of Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man right now, but when I clear the surf of that one, I know what'll be next.
