A Curiosity: The Anvil

So, yeah, one of the bonuses we get from riding around is that we have more opportunity to notice things we might not otherwise get to see. Things like a post-mounted anvil in someone's side yard, right there along the sidewalk where a passerby could break out a hammer and get to doing a little metal work. The work would be limited I suppose; I didn't see a forge anywhere nearby, so that is probably not why it is placed there. Is / was the owner of the house a blacksmith, a machinist, or some such similar craftsperson, and this little roadside monument is a nod to that? Is / was the owner of the house an actor who played a blacksmith in an old western? They may not have won the Oscar, but the Anvil is fair compensation?

It would make a pretty interesting hitching post. Weld a couple rings to and it would make a pretty interesting bike rack outside a makers' workshop. I don't think either of those is the case here, so what then? It's not something most people would do just for the heck of it.

Just one in a long list of interesting things you'll see when you get out and ride around.

  1. The wood fence behind The Curiosity Anvil is a gate that opens up to the real workshop behind. The Curiosity Anvil IS indeed a functional and much used tool that anyone can see, feel, and use if they wish in Claremont California.

  2. That's very cool. Now as I head up the street, i'm going to be listening for the ring of a hammer striking against it.
