Mission at Twilight: All the Cool Kids (and Dogs)
The mountainsides were dusty, but the higher elevation wildflowers were still blooming, and the breeze through the pines and the oaks was cooling making the... oh, that's right. Never mind i didn't go up to Rim Nordic for the first mountain bike race of the season up there. Let me start again. That concrete oval was baking the Valley sun, and the pace of the racers matched the heat radiating up from the surface, but... oh, never mind that, i forgot i didn't get out to Encino for the weekend finale of the latest Arizona Cup races.
Now i remember, we hoped on the Metro A Line, quickly and easily riding the rails out to South Pasadena where Mission at Twilight was happening along the streets through that city, on through Alhambra, and then San Gabriel, where the route ended (or turned around upon itself) by the mission.
I had not been out to an open streets event in awhile, but this one was intriguing, having an afternoon start and lasting into the night, rather than the morning start / afternoon finish. Then there was the usual stuff, the stuff that just works not matter the time of day. Each city with its own hub, a stage for music at each, activity booths for kids (and slightly more grown-up kids), booths of civic organizations, booths of municipal agencies, plus all the businesses along the routes that stayed open for the afternoon and evening - that watermelon / strawberry slushie hit the spot! Oh, and the Sungold Ice Pops too, cherry punch flavor, of course! Most of all, though, it's all those people, riding around, walking, running, skateboarding, roller skating, that make the day special. Oh, and the dogs, the cool dogs:
got into South Pasadena early, before people started showing up, which was fine...
as it gave us an opportunity to play the kids games
Trial Head bike shop, Alhambra where that guy in the booth outside had some mighty fine banana bread
