From the Archives: Mulholland Landslide
Well, i can't say as that i really remember it. Maybe that means the landslide we found blocking our way wasn't a huge deal to us. Heck, I can't even find any old news reference to it, other than an after-the-fact story in the Times from June 1995, hence three months after-the-fact, saying the city council had decided to close a 6.4 mile stretch of the road during periods of potential flood or fire. Anyway, March 26th that year fell on a Sunday, and the riders gathered for the weekly Park Ride (Griffith Park) arrived at a group decision to forgo the usual La Tuna Canyon loop in favor of heading out along Mulholland Drive. This, of course, was completely in the opposite direction of the ride we otherwise would normally have done and, presumably, would have dropped us off at Sepulveda Pass, where we could either backtrack, head down to Santa Monica, or head down into the Valley and circle back to the start. We chose the out and back that day, which means we would have hike-a-biked across the sliding mountainside twice.
I suppose it don't really mean much to find an incident, in the logbook, that happened on a ride thirty years ago to the day, something i otherwise would not have even remembered, but there it is.
no landslide here, just this evenings' sunset Out There
