Fast Digs Update

I know many of you have been waiting with baited breath for the announcement of the release of Fast Digs: The Bicycle Racing Venues of Los Angeles. You have all been so patient. As I have steadily worked through the task of sifting, compiling, writing and editing all the information that was, first, collected for Fast Digs, hardly a grumble of discontent has reached my ears, and the messages demanding that I "hurry up already," have been kept to a manageable minimum. Lunch hour by lunch hour it gets closer, but one thing that I have come to realize is that a single volume would be far too big. So, instead, it will be issued in volumes, with volume one covering the years 1880 to 1899. They will look better on the shelf that way as well.

Now, a little sneak peak:

If you're at all familiar with Pasadena that little shaded area of land spanning the 210 freeway might be familiar (the shading should probably extend across the houses to Lincoln Avenue, that main street on the left). This is where the Crown City Cycle Club had their Lincoln Avenue track in the mid to late 1890s. The old Terminal Railway, which bordered the property to the east, ran right where the freeway is now; in fact parts of the railway right-of-way are still visible north of this site.

There is a great map that actually shows the track, grand stand and bleachers, but few people likely know about it because, unless you know what you are looking at, you would probably think you are looking at a farm and farm buildings.

You will see that map, read about the track and the people who raced on it, and the many other early Los Angeles area tracks, in the pages of Fast Digs.
