Slow Sunday Scenes: With a Little Effort
Eighteen billion tons, 2.7 million miles - two numbers quantifying the amount of asphalt roadway in the United States alone. And then there is concrete. All told, some 61,000 square miles, an area approximating the size of the state of Wisconsin, and expanding all the time at cost of between two and five million dollars per mile. All to satisfy that addiction known as motor dependence.
One of the things I like about visiting the farmers' market on Sunday morning is that it provides so much evidence that addiction need not be, that nearly anyone, any age, any physical ability can get around under their own power. It just takes the effort. It just takes the will.
