Calowhatzit Now?
Calochortus (all together now - Kal-uh-Kor-tus). I had just turned onto Foothill when the thought hit me - why am i driving out to Bonelli when the Wilderness Park (Claremont Hills Wilderness Park) is just up the street? I am not completely sure where the thought came from, but suspect the gray May day may have had something to do with it. Anyway, and whatever the case, i drove a loop around the big block to arrive back home a few minutes later. The mrs. was surprised by my sudden reappearance, the dog was happy by my quick return, but i said farewells for a second time, hopped on the bike and began the ride up the street. I had already decided to make a detour into the Out There where, i had it on pretty good authority, the Calochortus was to be seen blooming again. Ever since i first noticed that elusive wildflower popped from the ground a few years ago i have continued to make occasional springtime loops along the dirt verge where they were sprouted - but to no avail.
This time though, there they were in all their pinkish and yellow glory, right where expected - my source for such matters proved dependable again. I was able to declare the detour a success, as was the loop through the CHWP, although a slow leak from something picked up down below (avoid the dirt verge west side of Mills between the fire station and Mt. Baldy Road) forced a short delay to deal with it beneath a big oak above Johnson's Pasture (and two more times before the old sealant did its job).
Anyway, it is the weekend now - get out and enjoy it! It may be a bit more congested than usual around town, what with commencement at the Colleges taking place over three days - that, though, is all the more reason to do your getting around by bike.
gray May still hanging around
when the sealant fails you, thank goodness for Co2
new restroom (and old water tank), Cobal Canyon
that red dirt road
