Slow Earth Day Sunday Scenes in the Viillage

 "...And they called it paradise
I don't know why
Somebody laid the mountains low
While the town got high...

Some rich men came and raped the land
Nobody caught 'em
Put up a bunch of ugly boxes
And Jesus people bought 'em...

And they called it paradise
The place to be
They watched the hazy sun
 Sinking in the sea...

We satisfy our endless needs
And justify our bloody deeds
In the name of destiny
And in the name of god...

They call it paradise
 I don't know why
You call someplace paradise
Kiss it goodbye."
(Frey, Henley)

You know, there are a whole lot of song lyrics that would work for an Earth Day post, but I always seem to come back to the Eagles' Last Resort. Yes, the annual Earth Day celebration took place in Claremont today, with the various participating civic groups set up around the green at Shelton Park. The event has considerably shrunk in size over the years, but the spirit is still there, and interest in engaging still remains high. Everyone from the city staff, to volunteers at the Tree People tent, the Citizensl' Climate Lobby, the new playground movement, and the various others. The Claremont Streets for People was ever popular with both kids and adults, while many people walked away from the Sustainable Claremont tent with a native tree or shrub in hand. Earth Day coincided with the usual Sunday farmers' market where, as always, things were a hoppin'. Just off the "market street" a stop at the Collective was necessary to pick up a jar of Finn's favorite "Funky Lil' Pooch treats. With bikes coming or going every minute or so, it was quite the busy morning down in the Village.
