10th and Main, Los Angeles

Even though no single person in it is identified, this is a very cool photograph, c.1900-1902. Within the wood structure behind the group, with one of its double doors thrown open, was Los Angeles' first indoor velodrome. Little by little, more of the history of this place, of the people who raced upon its banked wood track, and its role in fostering the growth, and international standing of bicycle racing in Los Angeles, reveals itself to me.

The racing history of the first couple months of the Velodrome was covered in volume one of Fast Digs, the bulk of what took place within those hallowed walls, though, will be found in volume two.
