2018 San Dimas Stage Race, Stage Two, San Dimas Hospital Road Race

"I'm going back to running." I don't know who said it, I am not even sure which race the rider who said the words was off the back of, but they were clear enough to pick from the competing sound of whirring wheels and chains. In print form they may not look like it, but the words were a curse. They were also a bald-faced lie. Once hooked by the road there is no going back, no abandonment, so surrender; just ask the trout in the stream, or the Pan in the Neverland.

The road is as much a Siren as was Leucosia, or any of her sisters, and as we well know, unless your name is Odysseus, there is no escape from it. You might, you can, stray some - the trails, the gravel, the boards - they all have their attractions, but there is something about the road that will draw you back.

more to come...
