Friday Query: What do You Want to See

What do you call the area where a lawn bowling game, or match, or what ever is played? Is it a court, a pitch, an alley? I know, I could look it up, but then I would not have been able to use the question as a lead-in.

When the cycLAvia exploratory ride came through the area over the summer, with various staff of the cycLAvia organization in tow, the inevitable question was asked. I say inevitable because I was intent on asking it if someone else didn't do so first. The rhetorical question was posed at Palomares Park and, of course, there were no responses at that time. Following up, now would be a good time.

With CycLAvia coming through our local communities - San Dimas, La Verne, Pomona, Claremont - what would you like to see during the ride, what would you like to be able to do? The hula-hoops, the chalk art, and various other standard fare are fine, but what about something different, unique.

My first, rather lame thought, was music - different local bands, singers, dj's spread out along the course every couple blocks, a linear, rolling concert of ever-changing musical genres. Perhaps a little cyclocross practice in a park. Neither idea all that different, or unique.

Consider the route - most likely Bonita Avenue and Arrow Highway. One of the hubs is projected to be Palomares Park, so right next door the adobe could be open, and right next door to that the Pomona Lawn Bowling courts could be open.

The best idea I have heard so far - bicycle drag races at the NHRA drag strip - the Spring BikeNationals. There is no guarantee that the route will be on Arrow at that point, but how unique would that be? The christmas tree lights up - red, yellow, green GO, and riders sprint down for a hundred yards or so. Maybe they have to make drag race sounds as they sprint, maybe playing cards are clothes-pinned to forks and stays to make that clap-clap sound against the spinning spokes. Maybe, because they are bikes, there is no sound but the chain. The drag race idea belongs to Marcus, by the way.

I can't guarantee the cycLAvia will see any of your ideas, but if there are more than one, I will pass them along.
