Heads above Pedals
What'd you find in your musette? A PB&J sandwich? A can of Coca Cola? A Baby Ruth bar, or perhaps a somewhat less satisfying energy bar? Some other little get-up-and-go wrapped in foil? A Rice Crispy Treat? A Slim-Jim or little salami? Apple slices, or Turkish Delight? I suppose the contents might be as varied as the riders picking them up in the feed zone, but
i'm not too sure how common it was to find brunette Barbie in there. Just a little fun, perhaps, to help the miles tick along. (Cruse or Safford photograph, 1990)
While looking for this photo, I rediscovered that thirty-three years ago to the day, the Rose Bowl Ride was winding down for the season; only about forty riders were out that night and, well, my right pedal was off, mid-stroke during the 6th lap. That night i only missed a lap before getting back in for the finale, leading the pursuit of a solo break. Fun times.
