SoCal Cross Fever, Corriganville: The Race is [Still] On

In the past, SoCal Cross Fever has been a series of about three race weekends kicking in after the SoCal Prestige Series concludes in December. Well this year, with the cyclocross national championships being held, kind of, local (Reno) the end of season Fever races were shortened to just one weekend of competition held, this year, out at Corriganville in the Simi Valley. This gives the SoCal folks a couple days to stretch the legs before the drive north for the races which start on Tuesday (non-championship), and Wednesday through Sunday for the championships.

The SoCal Cross Fever races have traditionally been lower key, more relaxed. The pressure to collect Prestige Series points is over, and though everyone still makes it a point to race (hence a surprise broken bike), the feel is more akin to a competitive group ride without the demolition of egos. End of season fireworks to determine a champion were replaced by the silver streams of tinsel shot from left-over New Years poppers. The turning of a new calendar page had passed a week earlier, but New Years was still happily being celebrated, the party had simply been moved outdoors - and why not, this is southern California where we no longer have winter weather to sodden our weekend festivities. That is our burden, though, and we suffered the blue sky and sun with sunscreen and sun glasses. Nor did I hear a single complaint about fewer wheels kicking up fewer, smaller choking clouds of dust. Cups of celebratory sparkling grape juice would have washed them down and away regardless.

It has been another entertaining season of SoCal Cross, and so, before everyone moves on to the road, the mtb, or the gravel grinding, thanks for that.
