The Dead Zone
The Dead Zone, that big triangle of chaparral and coastal sage scrub, which makes it far from dead in terms of native flora and fauna. From the human perspective, on the other hand, not much takes place. Use Google Earth and you will notice systems of water distribution and delivery all over - basins mostly, but channels, gates, and check dams as well. These days, I believe, most of that stuff takes place underground, on the surface it is mostly abandoned. Mostly I suppose, because of the occasional sign with the words "keep out" printed on them. There is always someone willing to explore, though. Exploration - one of the reasons to ride.
