2019 San Dimas Stage Race, Stage One: Backbone

You never know what you will find out in those woods, hanging from trees. Backbone.

The time trial. It has long been referred to as the race of truth. There is no hiding when you are on the road, alone. There is no sitting in, no drafting to conserve energy, there are no teammates around to lend a hand, or a wheel. You are on your own out there. True, you do not have to ride hard, there are even some legitimate reasons to take things easy, conserve. Doing so, though, means you can write off overall victory. So, it is just you, you against the road, the wind, gravity, the hill. Just you against the clock.

Physical ability will help you get to the top fast, but so will mental attitude. Backbone. Fortitude. Perseverance. Confidence. Resolve. Determination. Mettle.

It seems as though the rider with the most of those things came from the Juniors 17/18 field - Matthew Ricittello (LUX/Sideshow) with the fastest time of the day - 14:34 for the 4.25 mile uphill course.

what'd I tell ya, backbones in trees
