From the Archives: One that Got Away


The race was the Crits of Fury in 1996. Can't be sure of the timing anymore, but I think it was the finish, the final rush to the line. Clearly, at that moment, I was not aware enough to capture "Super" Dave Ward pick up the win ahead of, I (again) think Robert Paganini. Dave Ward was very effective at ramping up his speed from the saddle, rather than sprinting out of it. You may also notice that Dave raced with a slimmed-down hydration pack; in fact he may have been the only crit racer to do so. Ever. Anywhere. I would have given him a lot of flak for that but he kept placing and winning which kind of took the fun, and rightness, out of my argument.
